Deck Beams and Hatch

Sadly there are few photos of this area.  Installing the deck beams first required the installation of the coaming on top of the deck above the carling.

Making the carling took quite some time as it is curved along it’s entire length and needs to fit quite closely to the deck.  When the coaming was being installed I put the deck beams in as well as they gave the coaming its shape and made it a lot easier to bend into position.  Once glued in the deck beams were fixed permanently and the dashboard fitted.

The hatch that I made is a bit different to the one in the plans as I thought it best if the hatch hinged backwards so that, when on the water, it could be opened easily from the cockpit.

Here is a photo of the deck beams in place and the hatch framework sitting in place.

Shot from the back.

Shot from the front.  The lines of the deck are really starting to come out now.

Here is the hatch with 6mm ply and the first Blackwood strip being put on.

Hatch again will all the Blackwood in place and the Celery Top Pine strips inserted as well.  The paving blocks are being used to hold the thin strips down whereas the Blackwood has been stapled.

Here’s me test fitting the hatch to the boat.

Hatch again completed but not epoxied.  I was pretty pleased with how this came out.
