If I Did It Again

If I was to build a Dyno-Jet again I would not change much.  The hull and deck are fine.  I think that the power plant and pump needs a bit of work though.  In the early stages of building I enquired from Glen-L about using a Subaru motor instead of a jet ski motor.  I liked the idea of a four stroke and the engine is quite small.  The weight was an issue though so we went down the jet-ski path.

Anyone who has put a jet-ski motor in a small boat will soon tell you that they are the noisiest motors around and the roughest at idle.  With the 650 being a twin it shakes like nothing else when idling but smoothes out as it speeds up.

After using the boat and putting way too many large people in it I feel sure that the boat will cope with the weight of the Subaru motor and a real pump.  There is plenty of room in the engine bay for the motor and using a real pump (this means not a jet-ski pump) would remove the problem of the shaft of the motor being too high (different impellors would also be available along with a reverse bucket).  Cooling of a Subaru motor requires a water cooled exhaust and these are available here is Australia and I would reckon are available elsewhere.  Using the Subaru motor would add some extra weight (about 70kilos extra) but would be well worth the trouble.

All in all it has been a really good learning experience for me as the plans were good and help came from many people at the Glen-L bulletin board.  Thank you to you all.

Now for the next project – a Monaco is looking pretty good!
